AMERICAN MUSIC AWARDS 2010 Winners
Written by US Townhall staff
Sunday, 21 November 2010 20:04

Sunday, November 21, 2010 marked the 38th Annual American Music Awards, which recognize the most popular (not necessarily the best) artists and albums as voted on by the public at www.abc.com.  The nomination ballot was based on airplay information compiled by Mediabase and music consumption information provided by Big Champagne Media Measurement.

There are twenty American Music awards presented in total.  Thirteen of these are during the televised portion of the event, and seven award winners are announced off air.  Justin Bieber was the big winner of the night and won all four of the American Music Awards for which he was nominated.  Well deserved or sign of the apocalypse?  You be the judge.

In addition to the awards, the American Music Awards show is noted for its star-studded lineup of live performances:

 - Rhianna opened the show on a strong note as she performed "Love the Way You Lie, Part II," "What's My Name?," and "Only Girl (in the World)" from her new album, Loud, and earned a standing ovation from the crowd.

- Miley Cyrus: "Forgiveness and Love" from Can't Be Tamed.  Miley appeared to be singing live with no lipsynching and was actually quite good here.

- Kid Rock: "Times Like These" from Born Free.  An acoustic performance that was one of the better, and more memorable, of the night.  It'll be interesting to see whose album debuts at number one as his latest and Rihanna's both arrived in stores on November 16.

- The Black Eyed Peas: "The Time (Dirty Bit)" from The Beginning.  At the end of the song, the Peas welcome us to "the future."  But why did they do it singing a track that's largely an autotuned remix of a 25-year old song?

- Katy Perry: "Firework" from Teenage Dream.  Katy sang this live.  Good for you, Katy, and we'll forgive the occasional bum note.

- Bon Jovi: "What Do You Got?," a new track from Greatest Hits and classic tracks, "You Give Love a Bad Name" and "It's My Life."  Jon's voice was just-ok tonight.  Didn't even try to hit the high notes.

- Pink: "Raise Your Glass" from Greatest Hits...So Far!!!  Another enegetic performance from Pink.

- Ne-Yo: medley including "One in a Million" and "Beautiful Monster" from his concept album, Libra Scale

- Taylor Swift: "Back to December" from Speak Now.  Lots of gals using that dropping-in-from-the-cieling gimmick, but Taylor upped the ante by bringing a piano with her.

- Christina Aguilera: "Burlesque" from her upcoming film of the same name.  Great performance, and if this movie takes off, it could be a career course correction after some missteps in recent years.

- Usher: "DJ Got Us Fallin in Love" from his Versus EP.  Vintage Usher.

- Train: "Marry Me" and their megahit "Hey, Soul Sister" from Save Me, San Francisco got the crowd to its feet

- Kesha: "Take it Off" from Ke$ha and "We R Who We R" from her new EP, Cannibal.  We think these outstanding performances should silence the critics who dismiss her as just a Lady Gaga wannabe.

- Santana with Gavin Rossdale: "Bang a Gong" from Guitar Heaven: The Greatest Guitar Classics of All Time.  Santana and Rossdale demonstrated no chemistry on a track that could hardly be classified as a "guitar classic."  Carlos Santana was in his own little world playing his heart out as Gavin jumped around the stage and scream-sang in Carlos' ear trying to be noticed.

- New Kids on the Block and Backstreet Boys: medley of hits including Hangin' Tough, Step by Step, You Got It (The Right Stuff), I Want it That Way, Larger Than Life.  Well, after Justin Bieber won Artist of the Year, the only way to cap the night off would be a pairing of NKOTB and BSB, right?

Other performers included Enrique Iglesias with Pit Bull ("Tonight," "I Like It"), Sean Combs' new trio – Dirty Ditty Money ("Coming Home"), and Justin Bieber ("Pray").

64th Annual TONY AWARDS
Written by Scott Katz
Monday, 14 June 2010 00:59

The 64th Annual Tony Awards were held on Sunday, June 13, 2010 at Radio City Music Hall and was hosted by Broadway newcomer, Sean Hayes, whom most television viewers will remember from the hit sitcom, Will and Grace.

The Tonys are given out each year in New York City by the American Theatre Wing and the Broadway League in order to recognize achievement and excellence in American theatre.  Except for a single award given to a regional theatre, all Tonys are given to Broadway productions.  They are named for Mary Antoinette Perry, the co-founder of the American Theatre Wing.

In spite of the fact that the Tonys attract a far smaller audience than other major awards shows such as the Oscars – the audience for the Oscars tends to be about six times the number of people that tune in to the Tonys – the telecast is still highly prized by CBS, the network that has broadcast the awards for decades, as well as advertisers because the demographic of the telecast skews "rich and smart," making these premium viewers quite coveted.  However, because of its admittedly limited appeal, the awards are telecast in June after the regular television season has ended.

Although the plays and musicals on Broadway often run for multiple seasons the way hit television shows do, the Tony Awards are more reminiscent of the Oscars in that only new productions in the eligibility period are allowed to be nominated for an award whereas a television show or actor can be nominated year after year for an Emmy Award.  However, productions coming to Broadway after having run off-Broadway are eligible because they are new to Broadway.  The eligibility period for a production is determined by the Tony Award Administration Committee, and for the 2009-2010 season, it consisted of plays or musicals that opened between May 1, 2009 until approximately April 30, 2010.  Further, the production must have opened in an eligible Broadway theatre, which, among other requirements, must seat at least 500 people.  There are 40 theatres in Manhattan that qualify as official Broadway theatres.

Eligibility of plays and musicals (and their actors and craftspeople) for Tony Award nomination is also under the purview of the 24-member Tony Award Administration Committee, who selects the 30-member Nominating Committee.  The Nominating Committee consists of theatre professionals who serve three-year terms and are required to see every new Broadway production.  It is they who will determine the plays, musicals and talent that get a Tony Award nomination, which is voted on by a larger body of approximately 700 people.  These 700 voters include the board of directors and designated members of the advisory committee of the American Theatre Wing; members of the governing boards of Actors' Equity Association, the Dramatists Guild, the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers, United Scenic Artists, and the Association of Theatrical Press Agents and Managers; members of the Theatrical Council of the Casting Society of America; and voting members of The Broadway League.

The tally of multiple award winners was as follows:

Red - 6 Tonys (out of 7 nominations) including Best Play, Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Play, Best Direction of a Play

Memphis - 4 Tonys (out of 8 nominations) including Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical

Fences - 3 Tonys (out of 10 nominations): Best Revival of a Play, Best Performance by a Lead Actor in a Play, Best Performance by a Lead Actress in a Play

La Cage aux Folles - 3 Tonys (out of 11 nominations) : Best Revival of a Musical, Best Performance by a Lead Actor in a Musical, Best Direction of a Musical

Fela! - 3 Tonys (out of 11 nominations)

American Idiot - 2 Tonys (out of 3 nominations)
