Because of the press conference by President Obama on Tuesday, this week's American Idol competition was delayed by a day with the performances taking place on Wednesday and the results being given tonight, Thursday, March 26 at 8pm.
Last night's performances were centered around the songs of Motown and founder Berry Gordy and Motown legend Smokey Robinson were in the audience. Robinson also served as this week's mentor to the kids. This isn't the first time we've had Motown week on American Idol, and just as in the past, last night's results were uneven. A few contestants really shone brightly, but most were either mediocre or overwhelmed by the source material.
Here's a recap of what happened last night along with our predictions of who is in danger of being in the bottom 3.
(1) Matt Giraud sang "Let's Get it On" by Marvin Gaye. Matt received universal praise for his rendition from the judges who proclaimed him to be one of the frontrunners, presumably joining Danny Gokey and Adam Lambert. We liked this performance too, and it was nice to see Matt step away from the piano and work the audience because this particular song demanded that type of closer connection. Absolutely in no danger of being in the bottom 3 tonight. PREDICTION: SAFE
(2) Kris Allen sang "How Sweet it Is (To Be Loved by You)" by Marvin Gaye. Kris accompanied himself on the acoustic guitar for his version fo the 1964 classic. This could easily have been a trainwreck, but Kris's strong vocals and lively performance won us over and he received positive notes from all the judges. Simon asked Kris to have more confidence, conceit, and "swagger," but we don't feel that's necessary as Kris seems very confident and comfortable in his performances. He proved last week he can give a memorable vocal without hiding behind his guitar, and while he hasn't gotten the same level of buzz as Adam or Danny, Kris is so dependable and reliable in terms of entertaining the audience that he's clearly one to keep watching. PREDICTION: SAFE
(3) Scott MacIntyre sang "You Can't Hurry Love" by The Supremes. Scott actually has one of the better voices in the competition. However, Paula was right in that using the piano each week makes his performances all seem very similar to each other. This makes him very identifiable, which is a good thing of course, but given that this is a competition where there is an extra level of scrutiny on the singers, it doesn't lead to the most visually interesting performances. The judges have become increasingly critical of him, and we agree that if he does feel the need to stay behind the piano, he might have done better by not choosing this uptempo song and instead gone for a more soulful, emotional number. However, Scott still has much goodwill built up with the audience so even if he does land in the bottom 3, there's no way he will be sent home. PREDICTION: BOTTOM 3
(4) Megan Joy sang "For Once in My Life" by (among others) Stevie Wonder. The first unmitigated trainwreck of the night, Megan received pans from all the judges, and we'd have to agree. She was off-key a number of times throughout the song, and in general the arrangement was inappropriate for her voice and vocal stylings. We'd agree with Kara that "My Guy" by Mary Wells would have been a much better fit for Megan and possibly allowed her to show off a more flirty side as her performances have become too similar to each other over the weeks. PREDICTION: BOTTOM 3
(5) Anoop Desai sang "Ooo Baby Baby" by The Miracles. Anoop took a risk in singing a song by Smokey Robinson himself, but the risk paid off. Anoop delivered a great vocal and his voice fit perfectly within the key of Robinson's original vocals with very little change being necessary. We had a problem with the judges' critiques because they were damning him with faint praise, which often leaves the audience feeling ambivalent toward a contestant where they should be left feeling more enthusiastic about such a good performance. These kinds of critiques led to the departure of Jasmine Murray before her time, and we hope the same thing doesn't happen here. PREDICTION: SAFE
(6) Michael Sarver sang "Ain't Too Proud to Beg" by The Temptations. Sarver interpreted this song incorrectly with a lot of smiling and working the crowd on what is supposed to be a more desperate, pleading number. It wasn't a bad vocal, but it was emotionally flat and had a hotel lounge singer feel to it. There's really not much more that can be said about this except that once again, we feel that Michael will land in the bottom 3. PREDICTION: BOTTOM 3
(7) Lil Rounds sang "(Love is Like a) Heat Wave" by Martha and the Vandellas. Lil powered through the song as she always does, but we'd agree with the judges in that the song was too uptempo for her and didn't show off the strengths of her voice. A few times during the performance, she was on the verge of losing her breath, and the fact that the song began at a high energy level and remained that way throughout did not allow Lil to show off her vocal range and bring any emotion or nuance to her performance. We're hoping that Lil still has enough goodwill built up with the audience that she avoids the bottom 3, but we wouldn't be surprised to see her there. PREDICTION: SAFE
(8) Adam Lambert sang "The Tracks of My Tears" by The Miracles. Just like Anoop, Adam sang a Smokey Robinson song, but unlike Anoop, he changed the song in such a way that he had "a moment," as Simon would put it. Following a standing ovation by Smokey himself, Kara began her criticism with the mathematical gaffe of the series by saying "I got 6 words for you: One of the best performances of the night." That aside, the praise was well deserved for this tender, pulled-back performance from Adam, who had grated on us in the past with over-the-top caterwauling. If Adam were in any danger after last week's polarizing rendition of "Ring of Fire," he wiped all that away and catapulted himself back to front runner status. His risks don't always pay off with everyone, but he is interesting to watch because you never know quite what you are going to get with him from week to week, yet the results do somehow make sense in the context of who he is as an artist. PREDICTION: SAFE and once again, possibly the highest vote getter of the night.
(9) Danny Gokey sang "Get Ready" by The Temptations. Another song written by Smokey himself, Danny curiously ignored Smokey's suggestion that Danny sing the background vocal echo, but still delivered a solid performance. It was powerful, energetic, and much better than the quick put down that Simon gave it. The other judges gave it better reviews, and the studio audience loved it as well. In our estimation, it was one of the better vocals and performances of the night, and with Adam's, a lock to be one of the highest vote getters. PREDICTION: SAFE
(10) Allison Iraheta sang "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone" by The Temptations (although it was originally, and unsuccessfully, recorded by The Undisputed Truth). Inexplicably in the bottom 3 last week, Allison gave a gritty, powerful vocal on this classic. Having the advantage of going last, she would definitely be memorable in the minds of the voters and after great reviews by the four judges and a standing ovation by Smokey, Berry, and the audience, Allison should have no trouble staying out of the bottom 3 this week. There are only 3 ladies left in the competition at this point, and Allison clearly gave the vocal of the night on the female side. PREDICTION: SAFE
We correctly predicted that Alexis would be going home last week, so let's see if we can extend our winning streak. Based on last night's performances, we'd pick the bottom 3 as Megan Joy, Michael Sarver, and possibly Scott MacIntyre. We're very confident in our choices of Megan and Michael, but less so on Scott. If the last of the bottom 3 were either Anoop Desai (based solely on the judges' tepid praise) or Lil Rounds, we wouldn't be shocked, but neither of them should be in any real danger of going home. Certainly, if Lil Rounds were the bottom vote getter, we could easily see the "Judge's Save" being employed to veto that result.
However, if things go the way they should, it will probably be Michael or Megan going home tonight. Given that Michael has consistently underwhelmed us thus far, we'd send him packing.
Remember, that tonight's results show airs at 8pm Eastern rather than the usual 9pm. Musical highlights will include a duet by Smokey Robinson and Joss Stone, American Idol Season 2 winner Ruben Studdard, and a Motown medley by Stevie Wonder.
