As we predicted, Matt Giraud was sent home tonight, but the big shocker that will be talked about over the next week is that Adam Lambert landed in the bottom 2 after never having been in danger thus far.
So what happened? Looking at the top 5, it seems we misjudged just how safe Adam would be no matter what he performed. Watching his performance again, we think perhaps there was too much walking down the stairs and too much holding a single note so that overall there didn't seem to be a whole lot of singing in his performance. Compared to prior weeks, this one did seem more insubstantial to us.
Kris Allen also landed in the bottom 3, although that was kind of a cheat since Idol doesn't usually pull out the bottom 3 with so few contestants in the competition. Kris was actually middle of the pack, which is exactly where we thought he would be. The only thing we would have done would be to switch out Adam for Allison for the bottom 2. However, now that Lil Rounds is gone, perhaps Allison is picking up the votes that normally would have gone to her because anyone wanting to vote for a female now has only one choice. This may serve Allison well going forward as she is now the most obviously different of the contestants.
Next week's theme is Rock and Roll, where it would seem that Adam and Allison would have a natural advantage. This trip to the bottom 2 may end up being a good thing for Adam because now he knows that he can't just slide all the way to the finish line, and he has to fight to get there just like everyone else.
We're still looking to see Adam and Danny as the final 2, but it's clear that anyone has a shot now and everyone needs to play the rest of this contest full force.
